“The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.”
This is just one of the many unforgettable one-liners from the iconic movie Steel Magnolias. On October 14, L.A. Theatre Works reimagines this timeless story of friendship and the power of the female bond at the Center. The company’s classic radio-style presentation distills this poignant story and gives audiences an opportunity to experience some of their favorite dialogue in a whole new way.
“[Steel Magnolias] is one of the great tales of female friendship,” says L.A. Theatre Works producing artistic director Susan Albert Loewenberg. “Based on the real-life story of the playwright’s sister, it went from the stage to the big screen in 1989, becoming a modern cult classic in the process. Although the hair styles may have changed, it continues to shine as a warm, funny and penetrating look at the power of friendship.”
In fact, one of the most enduring aspects of Steel Magnolias is its script. Many of the hilarious yet vulnerable lines still resonate with audiences today. Almost everyone on staff at the Center for the Arts has a favorite line from Steel Magnolias. Here are just a few that we couldn’t help but share:
"I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence."
- In this quote, the character is talking about sharing in someone's pain or heartbreak. I like it because that's how I feel about my own friends. Their pain and suffering feels like my own, and I have cried and will cry with them in those moments.
– Camille C. Devlin, Assistant Director of Marketing & Communications
“I find it amusing. Men are supposed to be made out of steel or something. I just sat there. I just held Shelby's hand. There was no noise, no tremble, just peace. Oh god. I realize as a woman how lucky I am. I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life.”
- I have seen Steel Magnolias probably 20 times, and I have never made it through this part without crying! – Laura Nunneker, Marketing Assistant
“Honey, time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin' across your face.”
- This is the essence of Steel Magnolias: A little sad, but also funny and painfully honest.
Hyla London, Director of Marketing
