New York City Field Studies Course - January 13-18th, 2020

This class will explore the various careers in the performing and visual arts in New York City with a focus on PR, Marketing, Producing, Project and Museum Management, among others, and the challenges that arts professionals face in establishing and maintaining their careers in this dynamic city.
Our time in NYC will include meetings with top arts managers and executives, Broadway public relations experts, marketing and outreach directors, musicians, actors, artists, and entrepreneurs;performances, on-site observations and exclusive guided tours. We will tour Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters, museums, concert halls and several world-famous landmarks in New York City.
Topics to be explored include:
- preparing for a career working in the arts in NYC
- understanding the working relationships between the different arts management leadership and staff positions in the visual and performing arts
- working with unions, public relations and social media campaigns and challenges
- community and educational outreach funding opportunities and
- obstacles, among others.
Class activities may include (but are not limited to): meetings, performances, and tours with several Broadway and Off-Broadway theatres, APAP, MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, The Museum of the City of New York, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Roundabout Theatre Company, Signature Theatre Company, and the Cherry Lane Theatre. Excursions will include exploring Grand Central Terminal, Central Park, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Little Italy, Times Square, Brooklyn and taking the Staten Island Ferry, among others.
Our itinerary will be structured to allow students to explore additional arts venues and events according to their individual areas of interest and the surrounding regions during scheduled open time.
