For one Veteran, it is poetry that reflects on war and service. For military kids, it’s expressing their thoughts and feelings by learning to play guitar and writing songs. And for other Veterans and military family members, they express themselves through photos and drawings.
The Hylton Center’s Veterans and the Arts Initiative is grateful for the opportunity to provide activities and events that allow our Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers to share their experiences and honor military service through the arts. As a community, the arts offer us all a way to reflect, celebrate, educate, and participate - to reaffirm shared values, make new friends, and discover new resources. One local Veteran/workshop participant had this to say about the program:
"My daughter thoroughly enjoyed participating in the songwriter’s workshop. The workshop provided my daughter with the opportunity to express herself and share her experiences as a military kid. The coaches guided her through the brainstorming process and taught her various techniques she could implement to continue to strengthen her songwriting skills. Music has a profound ability to bring people together and is an excellent way to share your thoughts and feelings with others. I am truly grateful that this program exists as it has truly had a positive impact on my daughter’s life." - M.G.
