SCHOOL OF DANCE
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance is a performance-oriented contemporary dance program designed to prepare students professionally as performers, choreographers, educators, and active leaders of the dance community.
Students in this program demonstrate technical mastery and devote their college study to an intensive and comprehensive dance curriculum. Because of the professional nature of the BFA degree, the program requires completion of 123 credits of coursework.
The program focuses on modern dance and ballet, although students can also participate in a global experience class every semester, with offerings such as African, Afro-Caribbean, Spanish, Asian, Butoh, Uzbekistan, Indian and Hawaiian. Courses are also offered in jazz and tap. In addition, you'll have master classes from artists performing at the Center for the Arts and visiting Guest Artists.
In addition to the university’s general education requirements, your dance major course of study will include: technique, performance, choreography, production, dance history, body awareness, teaching, and synthesis.
Listen to alumnus Billy Smith (BFA, Dance, '07) describe how the School of Dance prepared him for a career with Mark Morris Dance.
