Patricia Miller had roots in Arlington before embarking on operatic and education career.
Patricia Miller has been awarded the John Toups Presidential Medal for Excellence in Teaching from George Mason University. The medal is presented to a faculty member whose teaching exemplifies the university's commitment to ongoing innovation and excellence in delivering transformative learning experiences.
Ms. Miller received the award at the commencement on May 18. Ms. Miller is a distinguished university professor of music and director of vocal studies, having sung extensively with prestigious opera companies around the world.
She is artistic advisor for Opera NOVA in Arlington, and she grew up in the Nauck community of Arlington, where she still attends Lomax A.M.E. Zion Methodist Church on South 24th Rd. During her childhood and early teenage years she was a student at the Charles Drew Elementary School, the Hoffman & Boston Jr. High School, and was a member of one of the first classes to integrate Wakefield High School. Ms Miller holds degrees from Boston University, New England Conservatory, and, as a Fulbright scholar, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy.
