Biography

Born in Washington D.C., Ian McEuen has garnered praise for his “focused, warm and consistently clear tenor,” and “vivid characterizations,” in both operatic and theatrical productions. Most recently, Ian portrayed Adolfo Pirelli in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at Signature Theatre, directed by Sarna Lapine. He has also been seen at Signature Theatre as Sondheim’s two other Italian tenors, Giuseppe Zangara in Assassins and LT. Torasso in Passion. In 2022, Ian created the role of Uncle Rondo in the world premiere of Why I Live at the P.O. with UrbanArias, continuing his long relationship with the innovative company. Previously with UrbanArias, Ian could be seen as Redwood Son/various in the world premiere of Floridaand Dr. S. in The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, as well as a member of the company’s acclaimed Opera Improv series. In 2019, he portrayed the Narrator in InSeries’ immersive production of Berlioz’ L’enfance du Christ. Previously, he was seen as Magician Nika Magadoff in the Consul with Baltimore Concert Opera. Earlier, as one of their Filene Artists, Ian made his Wolf Trap Opera debut in one of his signature roles, the Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos.

With Washington National Opera, he has portrayed the Hippo/Holy Man/Dog in the world premiere of TheLion, Unicorn, and Me, Eland in Lost in the Stars, and Goro in Madame Butterfly. He has been seen as Tobias in Sweeney Toddwith Atlanta Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, and New Orleans Opera. Other career highlights include Ramendado in Carmen(Annapolis Opera), Pong in Turandot (Nashville Opera), Pang in Turandot (Virginia Opera), Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte (Arizona Opera), Alpheus in Lysistrata,Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos, and Padre Antonio in the world professional premiere of With Blood, With Ink (Fort Worth Opera). Ian has been serving as a vocalist in the United States Army Chorus since 2020. He holds a BFA in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.M. in Voice Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music.
