Biography

Rodrigo Carazas Portal is an artist, curator, and educator from the Callao Province of Peru. He holds an MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art (2020) and a Sculpture BFA from George Mason University (2015).

Rodrigo is a New Museum’s NEW INC (Y8 + Y9) member, a full-time professor at the Kansas City Art Institute, and co-founder of R.I.C.O. R.O.B.O. —a cultural platform interrogating the western zeitgeist while disclosing untold stories from the Latinx current diaspora. Recent public programs and publications include Chuquimarca’s Tanda Sessions (Chicago Art Department, IL), “Amix, I’m Sorry” (published by Terremoto, MX), Untitled Art Podcast (Untitled Art Fair, FL) and “Looking” (New Lab, NY). 

Rodrigo’s awards include ARTKC Inspiration Grant (2023), New Museum NEW INC (2021-2023), KCAI Faculty Development (2022), Unnamed Fund (2022), AICAD Post-Graduate Teaching Fellowship (2020-2022), MICA UP/START People’s Choice Award (2021), MICA Graduate Merit Scholarship (2018-2020), Meyerhoff Fellowship (2019), Arte Bienal Lima’s Best New Project (2016), and GMU Sculpture Academic Excellence Award (2015).
