Biography

Dr. Hakyong Kelly Park is a native of Seoul, South Korea. She earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from George Mason University, where she studied with Dr. Linda Apple Monson, International Steinway Artist. Her dissertation, titled The Study of Donghoon Shin's Compositional Oeuvre, was supervised by  Dr. Tom C. Owens. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea) under Dr. Young-Ho Kim and Dr. Hyunjung Kim, and a Master of Music degree from The Hartt School of Music (Connecticut) under Dr. Paul Rutman, where she was a collaborative pianist. She also earned an Advanced Performance Certificate from New York University Steinhardt, where she studied with Eduardus Halim, the last student of Vladimir Horowitz.

As a performer, Dr. Park has accepted invitations to perform in recitals and conduct master classes in Suzhou, China. She finished a recital tour in Connecticut as the winner of the Connecticut Young Artist Piano Competition. She has also performed in master classes for such artists as Boris Slutsky, Alexander Kobrin, HaeSun Paik, Logan Skelton, Min Kwon, Marilyn Nonken, Florence Millet, and Simone Dinnerstein.

Dr. Park has participated in the Mannes Beethoven Institute, studying with Robert McDonald and Benjamin Hochman. She has performed Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at Frederick Loewe Theatre in New York as the Winner of the Steinhardt Concerto Competition, and has also performed in many Piano Recital Series in New York City.

Outside of the United States, Dr. Park was the prize winner of numerous Korean competitions, including the Eum-Youn Competition, Suri Competition, Seoul City Competition, An-Yang Competition, Kyung-Won Competition, and the Music Journal Competition. She has performed at the Seoul Arts Center (Concert Hall), Korea’s preeminent concert venue, as the winner of the Kaywon Concerto Competition. Also, a chamber musician, Dr. Park has worked with violist Rainer Moog, Principal Violist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Dr. Park has taught at New York University Steinhardt as Adjunct Faculty in Piano Studies. At George Mason University, she has been a recipient of the Friends of Music at Mason Scholarship Award and the Monson Endowment Scholarship Award. In 2018, Dr. Park was selected as a winner of Mason’s Concerto Competition, where she performed Beethoven’s 3rd Piano Concerto with the Mason Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Dennis Layendecker.
