Biography

Matthew McLaughlin was born in Montgomery, Alabama and began dancing Hula at the age of one, in Hawaii. Both parents met in the military, creating a childhood immersed in travel, connection and art. With his first two years of elementary school in Japan, the last two in South Korea and third grade in Alabama, he knew he loved to move. Matthew danced at the CityDance Conservatory at Strathmore in high school, under the direction of Lorraine Spiegler. During this time he performed at spaces including The Phillips Collection, Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, Harman Hall, the Lincoln Theatre, and the Kennedy Center for National Dance Day. At CityDance, Matthew learned from guests such as Koresh Dance Company, Hubbard Street 2, Ronald K. Brown and Maleek Washington.

In 2018, Matthew graduated from SUNY Purchase College with a BFA in Dance. While at Purchase, he performed in works by choreographers such as Aszure Barton, Kevin Wynn, Doug Varone, Kyle Abraham and George Balanchine, with his senior solo by William Forsythe. McLaughlin is an alumni of the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Program, and a Young Arts Foundation 2015 winner in Modern dance, solo by Rob Priore. During his last semester, he was honored to perform in Lar Lubovitch’s 50th Anniversary performances at the Joyce Theater. He attended SpringBoard Danse directed by Alexandra Wells, consecutively from 2016 to 2019. At SpringBoard he performed in works by Aszure Barton, Fernando Melo, Johannes Weiland, Crystal Pite and learned from many artists such as Jonathan Alsberry, Ami Shulman and Shamel Pitts.

Matthew joined the Mark Morris Dance Group in September 2019 and danced with the company until March 2024. Honored to have performed in Morris works such as “L’Allegro,” “The Hard Nut,” “Grand Duo,” “Mozart Dances,” “Pepperland,” “V,” and “Numerator,” to name a few. He was grateful to perform in venues such as Zellerbach Hall, Kaatsbaan, New York City Center, the Joyce Theater, JAZZ at Lincoln Center and Brooklyn Academy of Music, twice. Most recently he danced with Lucinda Childs Dance Company, performing her masterwork “DANCE” in Berlin, Germany. Matthew wants to thank his family and friends, for their inspiration and love.
