Biography
Freshman Matthew Parthenakis, Computer Game Design BFA, Mason Korea
Why did you decide to study abroad?
I decided to study abroad because of the program. Not many other schools had a system like this, so I decided to come to George Mason for this program and maybe finishing my degree here.
What is it that drew you to Korea?
For me, I have been living in Virginia my entire life and I really did not want to go to school an hour away from my house. A dream goal of mine is to visit every continent, but I also like more compact areas and since Korea is a small country everything is basically walkable like going to the station or when you're in Seoul everything is close together you don't need a Kakao taxi. The teachers are also very nice during the office hours.
What are your favorite classes at Mason Korea?
My favorite classes so far are definitely the Game ones, more specifically any class with Professor Broderick.
What advice would you give other students thinking of studying abroad?
When deciding to study abroad you need to have a stable support system whether it is friends or family. You also need to be comfortable being out of place or not understanding anyone. My Korean is basically non-existent but I've managed so far. But I would definitely say it is worth it because there are not many other kids studying abroad in their freshman year and it is an experience you will never forget. It can also change your life because I am also in full consideration of finishing my degree here which I wasn't considering that much before.
